Overview: The Director of Interscholastic Athletics is responsible for implementing the Mission and Core Values of the Arlington Central School District as they relate to interscholastic athletics and intramurals, while maintaining the laws, policies, and regulations established by the New York State Education Department, the School Board, and the Superintendent of Schools. The Director works cooperatively with all building principals on matters related to athletics and intramurals, including the hiring and dismissal of coaches. The Director may also serve as a curriculum consultant to the Assistant Superintendent for Arlington’s K-12 health and physical education curriculum. The Director reports directly to and is evaluated by the Superintendent. The following are the specific job responsibilities for the Director of Interscholastic Athletics.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Organize and administer the overall program of interscholastic and intramural athletics for the District
• Supervise the high school athletic program in cooperation with the high school principal
• Act as a consultant to the administration on matters pertaining to the athletic program
• Represent the school district in all athletic business at local, regional, and state meetings
• Enforce and interpret all athletic regulations as specified by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association and league and section in which membership is maintained
• Develop and implement appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of student-athletes, coaches, and spectators
• Coordinate pre-season coaches’ meetings (fall, winter, spring) for the purpose of scheduling athletic facilities for practices and games
• Conduct meetings with coaches, whenever necessary; to keep them informed of all matters pertaining to the athletic program
• Communicate regularly during the respective athletic season with all coaches on matters related to scheduling of practices and games, personnel, student-athletic performance, budgeting, community relations, and other day-to-day operations
• Assist in recruiting, selecting and recommending persons to serve as interscholastic coaches and assistant coaches
• Supervise and evaluate all coaches and assistant coaches (varsity coaches to be evaluated annually in written form)
• Prepare and administer the athletic program budget
• Supervise all ticket sales and fund-raising events for the athletic program and assume responsibility for proper handling of funds
• Supervise all athletic facilities and oversee facilities for maintenance and repairs
• Schedule practice use of all athletic facilities
• Coordinate with the Director of Facilities the preparation and maintenance of all outdoor and indoor facilities
• Make all necessary arrangements for the use of non-school facilities needed in the athletic program (i.e.: golf courses, bowling alleys, swimming pools, etc.)
• Maintain oversight of the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season
• Verify each athlete’s eligibility for participation in each sport based on local and state regulations
• Administer, enforce, review and modify (as necessary) the District Athletic Code of Conduct (in conjunction with the District-wide Code of Conduct)
• Work cooperatively with the high school administration and guidance counselors to ensure that student-athletes meet NCAA Clearing House academic requirements
• Assist students wishing to participate in college-level athletics in the selection of colleges/universities, including assisting in the understanding of the NCAA eligibility requirements
• Act as the media contact for all athletic-related matters in consultation with the Superintendent
• Maintain the District Athletics web site
• Address all parent concerns in a timely manner
• Maintain records of the results of all high school athletic contests and maintain a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award, including athletic scholarships
• Develop and schedule sports awards presentations at the conclusion of each sports season
• Perform teacher evaluations as requested by the Superintendent or his/her designee
• Perform other responsibilities as assigned by the Superintendent
SPECIFIC DUTIES PERTAINING TO ATHLETIC EVENTS
OFFICIALS
Coordinate the assignment of officials in cooperation with the BOCES Office of the Director of Interscholastic Athletics
HOME ACTIVITIES
Attend all athletic events; be responsible for overall supervision; obtain adequate personnel to ensure smooth operation on all fronts; establish a schedule of specific assignments and reporting times for all personnel involved with duties pertaining to the activity
PRE-GAME AND HALF-TIME PROGRAMS
Coordinate with appropriate personnel the starting/stopping time schedule for bands, pre-game ceremonies and half- time programs
ATHLETIC TRAINER(S)
Supervise certified athletic trainer(s); communicate the status of all injuries with the trainer(s); assist in the implementation and evaluation of the athletic training program
GAME PROGRAM
Assist the school in obtaining visiting team information to be included in the individual game program
LIAISON
Inform visiting teams and officials of the pertinent details of their participation, time schedule, dressing facilities, etc.
SUPERVISION OF PRESS BOX
Supervise arrangements in the press box for the official personnel having duties during the game
CANCELLATION OF ATHLETIC CONTESTS
In collaboration with the principal, make decisions regarding the cancellation of all athletic events, both home and away; weather-related cancellations will be made in consultation with the principal and the Superintendent
TRANSPORTATION
Prepare bus transportation schedule for all athletic trips and work with the Director of Transportation in the implementation of the schedule
