Job Description:
This twelve-month administrative position seeks a dynamic, creative, and articulate leader with a deep understanding of child development, learning theory, curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The House Principal will supervise and evaluate faculty and staff according to district evaluation procedures, fostering professional growth and maintaining high standards of accountability. The House Principal embraces and models the core values of the district and is committed to the development of the whole child and the belief that all children can learn.
Working under the overall leadership of the Executive Principal, the House Principal will provide consistent and proactive leadership for a specific group of students throughout their high school experience. They will foster a sense of belonging and cohesion within this subgroup, ensuring students feel supported both academically and socially. By building strong, long-term relationships with students and families, the House Principal will offer a more personalized educational experience.
The House Principal will also engage with staff across the school to support the academic, social, and personal development of all students, in alignment with the mission, core values, and strategic goals set by the Superintendent and Board of Education.
Performance Responsibilities:
Specific activities include, but are not limited to the following:
Instructional Leadership
- Works with department coordinators to design programmatic and instructional initiatives
- Provides instructional leadership and guidance for faculty
Personnel
- Directly supervises one or more Assistant Principals and all other house staff, including but not limited to school counselors, social workers, psychologists and secretaries assigned to the house
- Participates in the process of recruiting, screening, interviewing and recommending new staff members for the High School
Administration
- Assumes overall responsibility for a specific cohort of high school students
- Establishes individual and group performance goals
- Works directly with the Assistant Principal(s) to assure the physical and social-emotional safety and well-being of students and staff within the house
- Meets individually or as part of a team on a regular basis with those students who are struggling academically and/or behaviorally
- Maintains an active and visible presence during the school day and beyond
- Assumes responsibility for upholding and enforcing the District Code of Conduct and provides disciplinary consequences as appropriate
- Continues their own professional growth through memberships, attendance at relevant meetings, workshops, and conferences
- Participates in building and district committees
- Carries out all district policies, regulations and directives
- Accepts responsibility, as assigned by the Executive Principal, for overall school management and special projects (i.e., testing schedule, graduation, etc.) that may go beyond the scope of specific house responsibilities
Staff Development
- Provides for in-service training for a specific house or the High School in general
- Collaborates with the Executive Principal to implement all aspects of the Annual Professional Performance Review process and supervises the evaluation process for staff members as assigned
Community Relations
- Attends special events held to recognize student achievement, as well as other school-sponsored activities and functions
- Engages stake-holders, including students, parents, faculty and community members, in a shared commitment to the goals of the District
- Serves as a liaison to various community groups in an effort to encourage positive public relations and opportunities for Arlington students to be actively engaged in their community
